Karveer area the present town of Kolhapur city is one of special significance of Shri Mahalaxmi Temple of Kolhapur which, one of the Shakti peetha located in maharashtra state, mention in various puranas of ancient India have listed 108 sites where shakti ( the goddess of power ) is manifested which one is among these,
Mahalaxmi temple of kolhapur is one of the six sites of the Shakti, where one can get both fulfillments of desires as well as salvation from them. It is therefore considered of even greater significance than Uttar Kashi, the place where one prays for salvation to Shri Mahalakshmi the consort of Shri Vishnu.
It is said that both Shri Laxmi and Shri Vishnu reside in the Karveer area eternally and shall not leave even at the time of Mahaprayakala. This region is therefore also referred to as an avimukta-kshetra. Karveer region is eternally blessed and is believed to be held by mother Jagdambe in her right hand, and so this region is protected from all destruction.
Lord Vishnu himself adores this region more than Vaikuntha or the Kshirsagar since it is the home of his consort Laxmi. The greatness of this region has therefore attracted many sages and devotees, the blessings and affections showered by this region on its devotees are immeasurable.
The architectural structure of Mahalaxmi temple and the engravings on it indicate that it may have been built during the Chalukya reign i.e. around 600 to 700 A.D.
Statue of the Goddess Mahalaxmi is made of gemstone and is considered to be at least 5000 to 6000 years old. It weighs about 40 kilos. The precious stones that adorn the deity indicate the antiquity of the idol.
Platform of the Goddess Mahalaxmi is made of stone. The statue of the Goddess has four arms. In the lower right hand she holds the mahalunga, (a fruit similar to and ordinary lemon but much larger in size). In the upper right hand she holds large mace, kaumodaks, and its head touching the ground. In the upper left hand she holds the shield or khetaka, and while in the lower one she holds a bowl, panpatra.
Goddess Mahalaxmi’s crown have Shiva-ling facing towards north with a Yoni around it & is held by a cobra-hood and Standing behind is the Goddess vahana-a lion.
Almost all the idols of the Gods face the north or the east directions, whereas here the Idol faces the west.
It is believed that Prabhu Shri Dattatreya still comes here every noon to seek alms

Ghantanaad
- Ringing of the temple bells daily at 4.30am, 8.30am, 11.30am, 7.30pm & 9.30pm before performing abhishek / aaratee seva to inform devotees.
Opening Mandir Doors
- Opening of the temple door at 4.45am
At 5.00am Mukhamarjan, Padya Pooja
- This involves the waking of the deity with a Kakada - torch, to accompaniment of hymns Mukhmarjan, Padya Pooja.
At 5.30am Aaratee Ritual
- Ekarti at 5.45am & kapoor aratee at 6.15am is done called, Kakadarati with butter & coarse sugar naivaidya. Devotional songs in 'Bhup-Rag' are recited at this time.

Festivals
Sharadiya Navaratrotsav (Nine Devine Nights)
Almost all the Hindu festivals are celebrated with relation with the nature’s yearly cycle. Sharadiya Navaratri literally means; welcoming of Sharad; the winter season. A very prime festival of the goddess Ambabai (Mahalaxmi) of Kolhapur. The celebrations starts on the Ashwin Shuddha Pratipada & continues till Khandenavami.
Palakhee Sohala
Every Friday, at 9.30 pm, the utsav Murti of the goddess performs Pradakshina to the temple. This Palakhee Sohala is performed for nine days during Navaratri.
Lalita Panchami
On the fifth day, Lalita Panchami is celebrated when the goddess visits Tryamboli temple. It is situated in the outskirts of the town.
Nagar Pradakshina
Utsav Murti of the goddess performs Nagar Pradakshina in a chariot.
Vijaya Dashami
Vijaya dashami (Dasara) is celebrated under the royal patronage of the Karveer Sansthan. On this occasion, Palakhee of the goddess visits the famous Dasara Chowk where the celebration of Dasara begins. After the event, Palakhee visits Panchaganga River & comes back to the temple.
Rathotsav
Every year on Chaitra Vadhya Pratipada (the next day of Shri Jotiba Yatra); the goddess performs Nagar Pradakshina. A newly chariot made from silver donated by thousands of devotees is used for Rathotsav
Kirnotsav
Kiranotsav is an Aggregation of nature and architecture. Rays of setting sun directly approaches to the idol of the goddess Mahalaxmi (Ambabai); situated too much garbhagruhainside .; at the center of the This happens twice a year. Firstly, on 31st January, 1st February and 2nd February and secondly on 9th, 10th & 11th November every year.
